8 New Weird Burial Practices that are Going On

Holy Gardens Memorial Park - A Special Place for Remembering Loved Ones

I recently these recent article at Mother Nature Network regarding new burial methods and they are mainstream.

Mother Nature Network - New Burial Practices

These are:

l.  Resomation or bio cremation.  This is practiced somewhere in St. Petersburg Floria USA.  The process involves the dissolution of the flesh with potassium hydoroxide and heated water.  The bones that remain are then pulverized as in regular cremation and bone remains given to the family. This process is greener vs. cremation -  uses less energy and less waste products into the atmosphere.

2.  The natural burial.   The body is wrapped in shroud or biogradeable casket without the vault and embalming.  There are so called natural grave cemeteries.  And there are 50 of them in USA.  The costs are lower and the gory of embalming is done away with.  Dust to unto dust is speedier, to return the elements from the body to nature.

3. Cryonics.  The body is freezed at very low temperatures (-273 Celsius or O in absolute temp.  No chemicals are used to preserve the body organs and cells.  As of Aug 20ll, there are only 200 in cryonic preservation.  The cost is prohibitive -  $200,000 for whole body, and $80,000 for head only preservation

4.  Space burial.   This is the ultimate ego trip.  Your ashes are shot into space, hitching a ride with rocket into outer space. However, only l to 7 grams of cremains can be accommodated.  A company called Celetis Memorial Spaceflights offer such shots for only $3,000 or as much $12,500 for shots into the moon or deep space.

5.  Mummification.  Summum a religious group founded by Corky Ra that human remains (esp DNA) are preserved for eventual cloning.  It is available for humans and pets. The cost is also steep $63,000;   however about l, 400 people have signed up for this procedure in their last trip.

6.  Plastination.   This involves the preservation of the  of the body in recognizable form.  This was invented by Gunther von Hagens.  The body organs are preserved for eventual study in medicl schools.  Thousands have signed up for this for education and display.

7.  Freeze drying.  (Used for fruits and food processing?)  This is an eco burial process called Promession.  It was invented by Susanne Wiigh- Masak and this involves immersing the body in liquid nitrogen which makes very brittle (remember the movie Univesal Soldier 2?).  The body is then vibrated in a vacuum chamber -  water evaporates and powdered remains are left.  The powdered remains are buried in shallow grave, mixed with water to make them compost.  Promessa is the company that develops the service.  No one has yet bought this advanced service

8.  Eternal Reefs.  A Georgia based company called Eternal Reefs creates artificial reef from a mixture of concrete and bone remains of cremation.  Cremation is not very green though.  The deceased has the opportunity to be living with aquatic animals, be the little mermaid, and give more life in the sea.
